Summer Vacation For Kids: How to Create Anticipation

Finally, the rest of the world caught up. Summer fun is everywhere and for kids, it’s vacation time!

I remember getting all excited about summer, like it really is a big deal, because our teachers always made us list what we wanted to do during vacation. I usually put in picnic, beach and travel. We live in northern Luzon so for sure there are beaches that we can go to any time of the year, but somehow summer beach time is always special. Maybe it’s because everyone else will be there.

The Beach! Usually, going to the beach means getting burnt so as soon as I discovered books, I stayed under shade when the sun is at its hottest, then go swimming only when the sun isn’t too scorching anymore.

Here are a few tips to create summer anticipation in your little one’s heart

  1. Buy a scrapbook for him which he can fill with all his summer photos
  2. Collection project. Call it your ‘Summer Shell Collection’, and decorate a glass jar, which you will display when filled with sea shells!
  3. Teach him how to write a poem about summer. Start by making him describe the sun, the beaches, the flowers, the fruits, the BBQ parties, the lemonade stands. Note: These poetry projects got me into this whole writing thing, so it really works!
  4. Buy him a small camera to take snapshots with.

Vacation time means going out of town or out of the country. If you are looking for the best vacation deals, Shermans travel is a good place to start looking.

Television Behavior: The TV Surfer

The little Pinoy devil strikes again!

Here’s the deal. AJ loves TV and he is the master remote holder at home. We even have a theory that he’s learning a lot how to count via remote control handling, as he can easily find the channel he wants just by pressing buttons. Or, when he misplaces the TV remote control, via changing the channels on the TV itself. He utters words that ’sound like’ numbers as he goes from one channel to the next. And, he even prefers one language for the TV.

Yep. He configures the television himself, usually while he watches. He adjusts the color and the language right before he watches his favorite programs at Cartoon Channel or Karaoke Channel. He almost always manages to find the configuration he wants, with German as his language of choice.

The only trouble is, because he is Television Dictator at home, I and Daddy can no longer follow our favorite programs and have relied on torrents to watch our favorite series, such as House and Lost. One time, the hubby told me all about home theater seating and how it would be nice if we can all relax watching a big screen television. However, I pointedly reminded him that our son will hog that TV the same way.

But still, it would be nice to watch television in style, even if we have no choice but to watch ONLY Tom&Jerry and Dora the Explorer.

My Childhood vs. AJ’s Childhood

Back in nostalgia lane. I can’t help but compare how much my childhood differs from AJ’s. In our village now, I don’t see many kids playing tag or hide-and-seek. There’s a park, sure, but with the way things are right now in the Philippines, it’s a risk to let children play on their own in parks. Right now, it’s so hot inside the house. I want my son to be friends with other kids in the neighborhood like I used to in La Union.

We used to draw circles on the pavement and shoot stuff inside those circles. We’d ask some cranky old neighbor to share his Hibiscus flowers so we can mash and mix them with soap, for bubble blowing. More importantly, we’d go catching dragonflies and then let them go when we got bored.

Maybe progress now means having your child inside the house all the time playing video games on an expensive gadget and watching DVDs, but I can’t help but realize just how my son is missing out on all the fun of outdoor playing.

My resolution now is to earn enough from my freelancing so that I may be able to buy swing sets for AJ on Christmas. Since a second baby isn’t possible now, I’ll just be his playmate ’til he gets tired of playing with someone who says “No, too dangerous!” all the time.

This Mommy’s First Poetry in Years

My first attempt at poetry and it’s about Moms!
I suddenly felt very poetic tonight as I was cooking dinner. Like the floodgates of my creativity burst open. The keyword there is “burst” so the hinges are rusty, but it’s created with pure love.

A Mother’s Love

A mother’s dreams for her kids outlives the trees.
They live within us as we grow older,
No matter how we mature or get richer
Mother’s Love will never cease

A mother is how God shows his blessing
How he smiles to us from up above
With mommy’s touch we feel His love
So warm, so close and always forgiving

It takes a Mother to make a lovely place
Where a baby may play and learn to give
And know the happiest way to live
All with mommy’s everlasting grace

Who Started the Whole Pony Trend Anyway?

For as long as I can remember, parents have been pushing ponies as the single most cute animal in the world to their kids. Lately, the hubby and I have been bouncing the LTP (little pinoy devil) on our knees to …

1. reduce the energy he could use to climb the television and other dangerous places, and
2. because he loves it.

One time, while he was channel surfing (he utters the numbers of the channels while he surfs, by the way), he saw a horse and he started jumping around… then approached me while i was working and bounced himself on my knee. It hurts to say the least.

Now maybe the pony stories should stop. After all, there aren’t really ponies available in the general stores are there? Or I and hubby could just buy saddles so that it won’t hurt so much.

My Baby Grows so Fast

We went panic buying yesterday. Not food, but clothes. Baby clothes. Why? Because the Mother’s day dinner we attended made us realize that all of AJ’s ‘for outings’ clothes are too small for him!

I never learned my lesson on overbuying baby clothes. I bought dozens when I was preggy with AJ, out of excitement of course, and he wasn’t able to wear all of them because he outgrew each piece every week.

Passing blame, I blame internet hype. I go browsing sites that sell children’s clothes on a daily basis and decide that I (my baby, i mean) must own all the latest styles in baby fashion! Sometimes, I wonder if I am making up for my own fashion-challenged approach to shopping through my baby’s fashion sense.

:D

Nonetheless, now I think I learned my lesson for real. I’m going to make him wear his ‘good clothes’ even on regular days. How’s that for a plan of action?

Shopping is the Devil!

As I told a new friend, I am not a materialistic person. I am mostly content with what I have and won’t go out of my way to buy stuff that I deem “unnecessary” according to my strictly frugal Ilocano upbringing, which mandates that I must always save the bigger portion of my earnings in a bank account.

Motherhood changed me a bit when it comes to shopping. Suddenly, I am more aware of the trends, looking through color combinations more, and spending a lot more time in online stores such as Amazon and Buy.com’s best buy section.

Hubby tells me that I always had that in me and that I must have secretly suppressed my inner shopping diva to satisfy the guilt that overspending brings. Momhood has unleashed my commercial drive, and now I feel the urge to excel in that aspect of womanhood too, as I excelled in other aspects.

Mother’s Day Is Here!

This is the once a year day where mothers can be the Diva that they are and get away with it! Kisses, hugs, sweet nothings, more kisses and more hugs… you name it. This is the day we are gettting so much of it!!!

We are going out tomorrow. It’s going to be a dinner for la mama de sutil (the mom of the little pinoy devil), and I expect all moms to be in whichever restaurant we go to, strutting their best clothes, and celebrating the day that is rightfully ours. I expect tables to be fully booked and lights to be as bright as the vegas hotels we see on television.

The yearly happiness of celebrating this day with billions of moms around the world is sooo worth the hours of sitting in a chair with stir ups for hours with a bulging, moving tummy and a fetal monitor strapped across it.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY EVERYONE!!!

Mother’s Day Quartz Pendant

I am an avid crystal collector. I still remember my first crystal and how I can feel its energy as I held it in my hand in the specialty store where I bought it. In the recent years, embedding these quartz crystals became the trend in the jewelry industry. Not just the fashion crystal types, but also the healing crystals and those that promote well-being.

Life is made up of energy. When you lift your fingers, when you breath, a lot of energy gets burned up. More so when you express feelings of sadness or happiness; the heart beats a little faster and the butterflies in your tummy caused by these emotions flutter.

Literary sources cite crystals as sources of positive energy. I’ve seen a lot of crystal jewelries in the form of bracelets and pendants. The best way to harness the energy from the crystals is to wear them close to your skin.

If you’re like me who believes in the power of crystals, then this quartz pendant is for you. This trillion cut smoky quartz three-stone pendant is a must-buy for crystal collectors. it’s set in sterling silver, and designed to make a mother or a wife feel loved and special during Mother’s day. Welcome Offline Friends!

Hello readers and friends I invited over! This is the internet and this is my website.

Wondering at the greeting? It seems that right at this moment, all the people from offline life that I invited over to the world wide web, are here. Holiday is today and people are doing stuff they can’t do during normal weekdays. Hope they stick long enough to read this post before scooting over to find cheap flights, cheap ‘pron’, cheap stuff on ebay. (smiles)

As you know I have been a blogger for quite a time because of the fun that the clicky sound my fingers make on the keyboard. That, and because I am a creative lady whose thoughts are so overflowing with ideas that I need (desperately need) an outlet.

No, not much food recipes here, best girlfriend. Besides, what do you need them for, when you can always make reservations right? Kidding. I know you love to cook. Maybe, for you , I’ll post some soon, provided you remember the web address long enough to come back. :D

Too tame for you? Head on over to my evil side, if you’re more comfortable reading about the evil me.
