How Far Will You Go…?

One of the main reasons why I hesitated before getting a nanny is the paranoia that I might get someone untrustworthy. I am a bit of a control freak and I want to at least have an idea of what goes on when I’m not around. So, as a paranoid mom, should I consider a nanny camera to watch my nanny’s behavior towards my son?

The main issue would be privacy. A nanny camera, though its purpose is noble (from a parent’s point of view) is still a spy device not unlike those used in voyeuristic websites to record the actions of unsuspecting people. The ethical issues are limitless when put in that light, and I am not blind to these.

Regardless if the nanny is a pretty girl or an old hag of a woman, privacy is privacy, and if she ever found out that we are using a nanny camera to monitor her actions, she might just feel weird about it. If I ever use these cams to protect my child, my defense is that I wouldn’t watch any more if I prove that she’s doing her job right. After all, If I were in her position, I think I’d feel a bit violated. For sure a camera will be installed in the bathroom, as I would want to know how she bathes my son (or to find out if she shoots us some heroine) but as long as she doesn’t do anything fishy, I’ll uninstall immediately.

nonsense! she is in your house, taking care of your son and accepting your money! She is not entitled to any expectations of privacy. and why we say “she” there are nannys that are “he”

Good point sis! I’m as scared of emotional scarring (hurting, pinching, spanking with a broom) as I am with molestation. It’s really quite rattling to leave your kids with someone else. Of course the kids being only 3 or 4 yrs old wont be able to tell you, will they?

Hi when I was a baby, My nanny tried to hurt me too.My nanny tried to bang my head on the faucet.Maybe I was crying and she was frustrated. She was a young lady, so I was told by my aunts and mom.

Honestly, I would be considering a cam too if I were leaving my kids onto the Nanny’s hand alone. I mean these days,we could never be too careful. You should definitely install it in the bathroom,in my opinion.

    OMIGOD!!!
WTH is up with that nanny of yours? Even if a baby cries and cries no one should dare hurt him. I mean, there are other ways to shut him up… milk, bribe of a toy, TV, cajoling by offering candies…

I do not mind a nanny spoiling my child or giving him too much of his favorite food if he asks for it (even if it makes him overweight)… but hurting is a different matter.
