Gifts Gone Forever
I haven’t been a “grown up” for a long time. In fact, until a few years ago, I never really felt the need to analyze the things that we humans do to irrevocably destroy some simple delights of living in a beautiful world. I miss these experiences.
1. Drinking directly from the faucet
During the 80’s, kindergarten pupils were allowed to drink from faucets around the school playgrounds. In fact we were told not to buy cola and drink water instead. The water tasted sweet and refreshing. There were some bottled water companies then but these weren’t too successful as clean, fresh water was readily available.
2. Catching fireflies in perforated paper bags for a few minutes and marveling at the ‘miracle’ that these insects can produce such strong light.
The last time I saw a firefly was when I was walking home from school more than 2 decades. And even then, their numbers have dwindled to a few per tree. Sometimes, during a very dark night, I’d miss these insects.
3. Having 100 pesos (2 dollars) and feeling like a millionaire.
Splurging with only 100 pesos was easy during the time when the Philippine’s debt to the World bank was still ‘manageable’. Nowadays, one can’t even buy a complete meal with just 100 pesos.
The photo on this post is that of the lake at the top part of Mt. Pinatubo, Philippines. This was taken by my friend Tim during early morning.
